Making Horticulture Sustainable
A great deal of attention has been paid internationally in recent years to the sustainability of agriculture and forestry. Countless conferences have been organised and documents written. Labelling schemes have been introduced, along with codes of conduct.
By contrast the sustainability of horticulture has received rather little attention. Can horticulture learn from these other fields? What are the priorities?
Equally there are many ways in which horticulture could make a great contribution to conservation of threatened plants, or as part of sustainable development.
Next Steps
The ASH website is being launched with several discussion forums based on key questions. These and other forums will hopefully stimulate debate and set the agenda for a conference or workshop that could be held later in 2005.
- Which areas of horticulture need the most help to become environmentally viable?
- Which areas of horticulture need the most help to become socially viable?
- Which areas of horticulture need the most help to become financially viable?
